Lake Tekapo is situated at the foot of the Southern Alps in the heart of New Zealand's South Island. The lake was formed during the last ice-age, 15,000 to 18,000 years ago when huge glaciers deposited large volumes of rock that dammed the valley and formed the lake. The glaciers that still exist in the headwaters of the lake grind rock into a dust that is fine as flour. It is this 'glacial flour' that is suspended in the water giving the lake its magnificent turquoise colour.
The shores of the lake are home to some of New Zealand's best known tourist icons. The famous Church of the Good Shepherd was built in 1935, with its foundation stone laid by His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester.
Nearby to the church is the well-known bronze statue of a New Zealand Collie sheepdog. The statue recognises the indispensable role of sheepdogs in the lives of McKenzie Country residents.
Tekapo Jet gives you the opportunity to see both of these New Zealand icons from a unique perspective.
